Called by Name
Selina Dominguez

After years of pretending
I was more familiar with the mask
Both a prisoner and an orphan
I was shackled to a broken path

I was caged by my own fear
Yet your love met me there
Drowning in my own tears
Your love found me there
Surrounded by my failures
And whispers of doubt
I had yet to discover what this life was about

Lost
Abandoned
Broken
Alone
No name
No identity
No purpose
No home

That was how he found me
That was who I was
A spiritual street-child
Lost within the beggar I had become

Who am I that you would see me
With a love so strong that you would free me
A vessel so broken yet you'd redeem me
A soul so empty yet you would feed me
A life so messy yet you would clean me
A heart so homeless yet you would bring me
Into your family
Into your fold
In exchange for my heart
You gave me your own
Oh such love
Too much to comprehend
I've come undone by what you've done in me again

I didn't even want myself
Yet you wanted me so
I thought I had gone unnoticed
But you wanted me to know

That somehow you saw behind the mask I wore on my face
You saw right through the cracks in my flawed concept of grace
You put your hand upon the scars that I covered in shame
And you fought for my heart though only pieces remained

You saw me as I was
Knew me for who I was
Called me as I was
Loved me as I was
And still you want me as I am
I have yet to understand
But it amazes me how you can so amazingly plan
To come in just at the right moment and take the chains right from my hands

You put your hand upon the scars that I covered in shame
And you fought for my heart though only pieces remained

You said that I was yours, but still unsure of what that meant
I was bent on going back, stepping off track, yet you never went
Away
Instead you stayed
Kept drawing me in, forgiving my sin, that I would go and sin no more
And I found that in you, only in you, my chains would forever remain on the floor

And now I'm ready to do
Ready to move
Ready to live as one worthy of you
I'm ready to speak
Ready to stand
Ready to place my whole life in your hands
That the world may see
What you've done in me
I can't stand idly by
When you've set me free

I'm free to be yours
In being yours I am known
And as I run this race
I don't have to run it alone
In your presence I abide
Surrendering my life
As a living sacrifice
I won't stand idly by

No more works done in vain
No more hiding behind shame
No more shackles, no more chains
For You have given me a new name
I am yours and you are mine
Here in your presence, I'll abide

No longer an orphan
No longer a slave
No longer defined by the weight of my chains
I scream, "I'M free!"
I shout, "I'M His!"
That the WORLD may know the beauty in this
That such love would come and make us his own
Take shattered pieces of our hearts and make us whole
Breathing into our nostrils, He awakened our souls
Now as children of God, we no longer walk alone

Now Every word has meaning
No work is in vain
Every scar has a purpose
Every action follows grace
For when the light found us in our darkness
And came into our souls
He made us vessels of light to show the world which way to go

So let's spread like a wildfire
Let nothing quench our thirst
For a faith based on grace alone is a faith that truly works
Oh children of God, may we awaken our souls
For while the harvest is many, we do not labour alone

The moment He broke through my chains and came riding in like a Knight
He placed the key in my hands that I may carry on His light
As the world desperately waits, He sends me into the night
Now I can take a stand, but I can't stand idly by
Yes I can take a stand, but I can't stand idly by

For You put your hand upon the scars that I once covered in shame
And you fought for my heart though only pieces remained
When you called me your child
You called me by name
Oh the power of your love
Oh the wonder of your grace

When you gave me a new name
My life could never be the same
For when you called me your child

You called me by name
